Congratulations Joseph Owino- Chairperson MKU Special Needs Association

Joseph Owino a 3rd year Bachelor of Education had the privilege of representing his motherland Kenya in the just completed African Para Taekwondo Championship in Niamey, Niger on 3rd of February, 2022. Joseph Owino, is a 4th year student pursuing  Bachelor’s in Economics and Statistics degree.

The team managed to scoop four medals (silver medal and three bronze). Joseph Owino who is also the Chairperson of the MKU Special Needs Association managed to win a bronze medal in the competitions. He participated in the K44 Category of Under 70kg where he’s the only Kenyan who played in the category and emerged 3rd best enabling him to get a Bronze medal thereby increasing his rankings in the World Taekwondo team where he is a registered member.

 “I am grateful for this win. I’m aiming for gold in my next match to secure my spot in the 2024 World Paralympics in Paris, France” Joseph Owino said

Mount Kenya University is committed to creating an enabling environment for special needs to thrive both in and outside class. This will go a long way in having young talented students unlock their potential and fly Kenyan flag higher. The Kenyan team was also recognized as the best team in fair play out of the more than 15 countries that participated in the championships. The host team, Niger emerged as the best team in the championships as their coach got the best coach’s award.
