A Dream Come True: Meet Makuei Junior Maluk

Makuei Junior Maluk hails from South Sudan, a country renowned for its rich culture and diverse ethnic groups and insanely tall citizens.

Drawn by Mount Kenya University’s (MKU) strong academic reputation and innovative environment, he chose to study there, partly influenced by his cousins who were already students at MKU. His arrival in Kenya was marked by excitement and nervousness, but the warm hospitality of the Kenyan people and MKU’s welcoming environment helped him settle in.

At MKU, Makuei is currently pursuing  masters of science in project management and planning. He finds the academic environment dynamic and diverse, with a strong emphasis on practical learning and collaboration. Adjusting to academic expectations and cultural differences was challenging, but Makuei overcame these hurdles by seeking support from faculty, participating in orientation programs, and engaging with student services. He made friends through student organizations and campus activities, appreciating the university’s diverse student body.

Mr. Makuei describes one of his greatest moments as being able pursue his degree and organizing International Student Cultural Festival during his undergraduate studies

“Organizing an international student cultural festival and completing my undergraduate degree is a feat I’ll always be proud of. The cultural event brought together students from diverse backgrounds to celebrate their cultures through music, dance, and food. It was a fantastic way to promote cultural understanding and unity among the student body”

The international relations aficionado describes his typical day at Mount Kenya University  “It starts with attending lectures and seminars, which are often interactive and engaging. In between classes, I spend time in the library or study areas working on assignments and projects. What I like most is the group discussions or participating in various student organizations and extracurricular activities”

The library resources and career services at MKU have been particularly beneficial. Makuei is proud of organizing an international student cultural festival, promoting cultural understanding and unity. He advises prospective international students to actively engage with the university community.

Makuei’s experience at MKU has shaped his career aspirations, preparing him to contribute to development projects in South Sudan and beyond. He expresses gratitude to his professors, the International Students Office, his family, and peers for their support.

He is currently reading The Lean Startup by Eric Ries.  “My favorite Kenyan dish is Nyama Choma, which is roasted meat typically served with ugali and kachumbari. It’s a flavorful and hearty meal that I enjoy sharing with friends” he adds

His partying shot?

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my professors and the International Students Office at MKU for their unwavering support. Special thanks to my family back home in South Sudan for their continuous encouragement and belief in my dreams. Lastly, I am grateful to my peers who have made this journey memorable with their friendship and camaraderie”
