World International University Sport Day 2024: A Celebration of Sports, Health, and Leadership
Each year, September 20th marks World International University Sport Day (IDUS), a global event established to promote the importance of physical activity and sport participation among university students.
The focus is on harnessing the immense potential of students to develop skills that go beyond the classroom and foster a culture of well-being, teamwork, and leadership as espoused in this year’s theme Empowering Students Through Sports and Leadership
Sports and Education
Sports play an invaluable role in complementing formal education by nurturing essential soft skills. Students who engage in sports are often better equipped to handle academic pressure, manage their time effectively, and develop strong leadership abilities. These skills make them more adaptable to the challenges they face in both their academic and professional careers. Furthermore, the camaraderie built through sports fosters a sense of unity, allowing students from diverse backgrounds to come together, form lasting bonds, and learn from one another.
For many students, sports serve as a platform to explore their talents and achieve greater goals beyond their academic endeavors. One such inspiring story is that of Esborn Onderi Sikiah, a student who has exemplified the power of dedication and sportsmanship throughout his life.
Esborn Onderi Sikiah: From Nyamarambe to International Soccer Stardom
Born in Nyamarambe, Kisii County, Esborn’s journey into the world of soccer began in the streets of Eldoret, where his passion for the game grew under the influence of local KPL soccer stars like Mark Sirengo and Sammy Simuyu. Watching their daily training sessions at Eldoret Kipchoge Stadium sparked a fire within him that would eventually lead to his remarkable achievements in the soccer world.
After excelling in the Rift Valley’s National Primary Games, Esborn caught the attention of high school coaches, eventually joining Koderobara High School, where his talent continued to blossom. His determination and love for the game saw him play with clubs like Sony Sugar, Shabana FC, and Nyamarambe Combine, sharpening his skills and gaining recognition as a promising soccer player. However, Esborn’s journey was never just about soccer—it was about balancing education and sport, which he did with impressive dedication.
While pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in IT at Mount Kenya University, Esborn became an integral member of the MKU FC, a team competing at the KPL Division level. His time at MKU not only enhanced his soccer career but also allowed him to develop strong relationships with fellow students and lecturers, reinforcing the importance of academic growth alongside sports.
Balancing Academics and Athletics
Esborn’s journey highlights the significance of making full use of university resources to nurture both academic and athletic aspirations. Through the support of his university, Esborn was able to balance soccer competitions with his IT studies, laying the groundwork for his future success in both fields.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Esborn pursued his master’s degree in IT Cyber Security at Charles Darwin University in Australia, while continuing to shine in soccer. His participation in the Australian Refugee Cup and subsequent signing with Darwin Heart FC allowed him to not only showcase his talent internationally but also earn the title of Most Valuable Player in the 2023 season. His impressive achievements, both academically and athletically, culminated in the team winning the Australian Cup in 2024.
Giving Back and Inspiring the Next Generation
Esborn’s story is one of resilience, hard work, and a commitment to giving back. After years of academic and sporting achievements, he felt compelled to return home to inspire young talents in Kenya. Esborn began volunteering with scholarship programs, leading STEM sessions, and organizing soccer tournaments to uplift young athletes. His efforts in nurturing the next generation of soccer players and scholars underscore the impact of combining education with sport.
His contribution to community development earned him recognition, including being elected Vice President of African Students in Northern Territory, Australia. Esborn also played a key role in organizing African Day celebrations and the African Cup of Nations in Australia. His dedication to supporting students, athletes, and the African community highlights the broader role sports can play in empowering individuals and communities.
Maximizing University Resources for Sports and Growth
World International University Sport Day serves as a reminder for students to embrace the resources available in universities to develop not just their academic abilities but also their physical health, leadership skills, and overall well-being.
