“Making The Best Out of University Life Through Clubs and Societies” Rukia Ahmed

University life is not just about academics; it’s also about personal growth, networking and exploring passions. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through joining clubs and societies in the university.

My experiences with clubs and societies have profoundly shaped my university journey, offering opportunities that I never imagined.

I remember joining Mount Kenya University, main campus on 9th September,2021; I was fresh from high school and very eager to start my campus life, little did I know that there was so much in store for me.

Here are some ways in which clubs and Societies have shaped me to become the best version of myself.

DISCOVERING PASSION AND PURPOSE

When I joined Mount Kenya University, I sought a way to continue my passion for environmental conservation, which I had developed in high school. Pursuing Education as a career didn’t let me forgo my passion for the environment but rather, I wanted to balance my academic life and co-curriculum.

Finding Mount Kenya University Environmental Club at the registration desk was a turning point for me. Through this club, I immersed myself in activities focused on climate change, attended conferences, and engaged in projects that promote environmental awareness. This involvement not only allowed me to pursue what I love but also equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge.

BUILDING LEADERSHIP SKILLS

My journey in Mount Kenya University Environmental Club progressed quickly. I began as an active member, then vice chairperson and eventually became the chairperson. This leadership role was instrumental in my development; I learned to coordinate events, collaborate with other organizations, and represent our club at both national and international platforms. I had the incredible opportunity to attend significant events like the Climate Justice Camp in Tunisia, Lebanon, COP 27 in Egypt and Africa climate summit where I connected with people from across the globe to advance Climate justice issues. This exposure helped me grow my network and build essential leadership skills, culminating in our club being awarded “Most Active Club of the Year” in 2023 which was a historic achievement.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Beyond the environmental club, my role as chairlady of the Mount Kenya University Muslim Student Association (MAMKU)was equally fulfilling. This platform connected me with Muslim students across various universities, enabling us to engage in community service and empowerment initiatives. We organized events that gave back to society, enriching our university experience.

Additionally, my involvement with Africa Youth Leadership Forum Club helped shape my leadership perspective. Even without a formal leadership role, being an active member allowed me to attend discussions and community events that inspired my ambitions and connected me with aspiring leaders. Through debates on important issues that affect our society especially the youth, I was able to see things from a different perspective and challenge myself on critical and design thinking in addressing issues.

NETWORKING

You must have heard the quote “Your Network is your Net worth “Well, I can testify this. Through my membership in clubs, I made networks and friends that become very resourceful. Additionally, I made networks outside the university through participating in outdoor activities organized by the clubs and almost all were very resourceful and supportive.

I also connected with big organizations that were able to connect me with opportunities.

One of the biggest achievements from this is starting and registering an environmental NGO together with my friends and getting support from this network.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Engaging in these clubs helped me balance my academic responsibilities with meaningful extracurricular activities. I learned to manage my time effectively, focusing on pursuits that fostered personal growth and community impact. These experiences enriched my university life, allowing me to build strong friendships and collaborate on impactful projects.

Through my leadership roles, I established good relationships with the university administration, which opened doors for further opportunities, including my appointment as an electoral commissioner for the MKUSA election 2023/2024.These experiences provided me with certificates and recognition for my contributions, underscoring the importance of active participation in university life.

REALIZING POTENTIAL AND PASSION

Ultimately, clubs and societies have been instrumental in helping me realize my potential. My dedication to environmental conservation was recognized when I received the Climate Action Award from the university. These experiences not only nurtured my passion but also provided a sense of fulfillment and joy.

I cherished our weekly club meetings, outdoor activities like hiking, and team-building events such as bonfires and game nights. These moments fostered creativity and problem-solving, allowing us to tackle the challenges we faced together as well as strengthen our bonds and build a sense of community. Notably, it makes me a proud alumnus knowing I was able to inspire a lot of students in pursuing their dreams and passion through my leadership and active engagement in clubs and Societies.

Leveraging clubs and societies during your university years can significantly enhance your experience.

They offer platforms for personal and professional growth, foster connections, and allow you to explore your passions. My journey through clubs and societies has shown me the transformative power of these underrated organizations.

These opportunities won’t just knock at your door, you have to make them a priority, sacrifice your time and resources and in return you get one of the best university experiences.

Don’t be a student who graduates from university without finding your purpose and one of the ways is to join clubs and societies.

As much as the clubs and societies are not financially supported by the university, there is so much you can do as a member of the club to support its activities for your own benefit and for the benefit of the community.

There are many clubs, societies and Associations in Mount Kenya University that could help you realize your potential and build your personal brand.

I encourage all students to actively engage in clubs that resonate with their interests, as these experiences will not only enrich your university life but also shape your future.
