Meet Mr. Heri Manyara – Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine and Community Health

Could you tell us a little about yourself and where you’re from?

    My name is Heri Manyara, a Kenyan and graduand- Class of 2024 upon completing a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine and Community Health at Mount Kenya University. I enjoy Writing, Reading , Wildlife Photography and Cooking.  I am also passionate about organizing community outreach programs, eSports and mentorship

    What inspired you to pursue your field of study?

    My inspiration stems from a deep desire to serve my community by improving access to quality healthcare. Growing up, I witnessed the challenges people faced in accessing medical services, which motivated me to pursue a career where I could make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

    What led you to choose this particular course and university?

    I chose Clinical Medicine and Community Health because it aligns with my passion for healthcare and community service. Mount Kenya University stood out to me for its excellent reputation in health sciences and its state-of-the-art facilities, which provided a conducive environment for both learning and personal growth. 

    Are there any standout experiences or memorable moments that have shaped you academically?

    One standout experience was organizing a medical camp at General Kago Primary School. Additionally, I had the privilege of representing my faculty and university in Idea Camp 2021.

    This hands-on initiative gave me invaluable practical experience and reinforced the importance of community service in healthcare. 

    How would you describe your overall experience on campus?

    Transformative. The university provided not just academic knowledge but also opportunities for leadership, networking, and personal growth. It was a challenging yet rewarding journey that shaped me into a more resilient and purpose-driven individual. 

    What were some of your favorite places or hangout spots on campus?

    I enjoyed spending time at the library and the university cafeteria, where I could engage in both academic discussions and social interactions. These spaces fostered a sense of community and balance in my university life. 

    Were you involved in any clubs, sports, or student organizations?

    Yes, I was actively involved in several clubs, associations, and leadership initiatives. I served as the Class Representative for my cohort and participated in clubs such as the Red Cross and the Integrity Club. I was also a member of key professional associations, including the Clinical Medicine Students Association (CLIMSA) and the Mount Kenya University Health Students Association (MKUHSA).

    Beyond memberships, I engaged in student leadership and campus politics, which allowed me to advocate for students’ needs effectively

    How have these activities impacted your university experience and personal growth?

    These roles honed my leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. They taught me the value of teamwork, resilience, and the impact of serving others. These experiences prepared me for future professional responsibilities and leadership roles. 

    What challenges did you face during your time at university, and how did you overcome them?

      Balancing academic responsibilities with leadership roles was challenging. I overcame this by developing effective time management strategies and seeking support from mentors and peers. 

      What unique opportunities did you encounter that you believe prepared you for the future?

        The opportunity to lead CLIMSA and participate in health outreach programs prepared me to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. These experiences provided a real-world perspective on healthcare challenges and solutions. 

        How has university life changed you as a person?

          University life has instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and a stronger sense of purpose. I have grown into a more confident and self-aware individual, ready to take on future challenges. 

          What skills or lessons have you gained that you’ll carry forward in your career?

            I have gained critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills, as well as a deep understanding of patient-centered care. These will be instrumental in my clinical practice and any other professional pursuits. 

            What are you currently reading?

              I am currently reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein.

              Outside of academics, what are some of your personal interests or hobbies?

                I enjoy writing, reading, Wildlife Photography and Cooking.  I am also passionate eSports, organizing community outreach programs and mentorship.

                What advice would you give to current or incoming students?

                  Despite the demanding nature of this course, it’s a lucrative career. As thus, it important to note that you – yes, you, will need to put in the work, make sacrifices and burn the midnight oil as often during your coursework.

                  You also need to be prayerful and seek guidance from God

                  What is your mission statement?

                    To improve access to quality healthcare and foster mental health awareness while championing sustainability and community development through innovative, compassionate, and patient-centered approaches.

                    What are your goals and plans after graduation?

                      I am passionate about eSports in Kenya and organize tournaments and events under Santiago Entertainment, a leading eSports Company in Kenya keen on identifying, nurturing and providing platform for budding talent. Community outreach programs and climate action are also close to my heart aside from writing. My overarching vision is to create an ecosystem where health, innovation, and sustainability thrive together, ensuring I contribute meaningfully to my community and beyond.
