Mount Kenya University (MKU) continues to champion inclusivity and talent development as its Abled Differently team recorded outstanding success at the 2024 Kenya University Parasports Championship. The prestigious event, organized by the Kenya University Championship Federation (KUCF), was held at Kenyatta University on 30th November 2024 and 1st December 2024. It brought together Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD) from over 20 universities across Kenya to compete in various sports.
Leading the triumphs was the dynamic duo of Daniel Boke and Rashid Mohamed, who showcased exceptional skill and determination in the Darts competition. The pair emerged as the Men’s Darts Champions, winning five out of their six matches and securing MKU a coveted spot on the winners’ podium for the year 2024 tournament’s Champions. This victory reflects their prowess and the spirit of teamwork and resilience that characterizes the MKU Abled Differently team.
The MKU team also achieved commendable success in other categories. Sostine Makari demonstrated incredible speed and agility in the 100×100 meters race, earning a medal that highlights his athletic prowess. In the field events, Dan Kindi displayed remarkable skill and precision, clinching a medal in the Javelin competition.
Adding to the university’s accolades, the MKU Abled DifferentlyMen’s Goalball Team emerged as second runners-up, earning a trophy after fierce competition. The team’s performance is a testament to their dedication and teamwork, which continues to set an example for all sports enthusiasts.
The championship featured an extensive range of events, including Scrabble, Chess, Table Tennis, Showdown, Athletics Track Events (Sprints and Middle-Distance Races), Athletics Field Events (Javelin, Discus, Shot Put), Sitting Volleyball, and Goalball. This diversity offered a platform for PLWD participants to demonstrate their unique talents and sportsmanship, fostering inclusivity and breaking barriers in sports.
The MKU Abled Differently team’s remarkable performance is attributed to the unwavering support and guidance of the university leadership, together with that of the MKU Special Needs Association Coordinator Mr. John Mwangi, and the Chairperson Denis Waititu. Their commitment to ensuring that students with disabilities are empowered and well-prepared to participate in such prestigious tournaments is evident in the team’s success.
The team also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the MKU management for prioritizing inclusivity and granting Abled Differently students the opportunity to participate in the championship. This support not only underscores MKU’s dedication to inclusivity but also highlights the university’s commitment to showcasing the diverse talents of its students.
The success of the MKU Abled Differently team at the 2024 Kenya University Parasports Championship reaffirms the university’s position as a leader in promoting inclusivity, excellence, and empowerment through sports. These achievements inspire the entire university community and emphasize the importance of creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and excel.
