In a dazzling display of digital prowess, the first-ever Kenya Universities Esports League (KUEL) the Mwai Kibaki Convention Center became the epicenter of digital battles on November 12, 2023, hosting the debut of the Kenya Universities Esports League (KUEL).
Brought to life by Mount Kenya University, Santiago Entertainment, IndexG and Kenya University E-sport League (KUEL) this inaugural tournament marked the commencement of an extraordinary esports legacy.
Universities from across Kenya, including Mount Kenya University, Jomo Kenyatta of agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta university, KCA, Pwani University, USIU, UON, TUK, Thika Technical institute, Muranga Technical institute, Moi University, Cooperative University, Kisii University, Tullips institute, Strathmore University and Multimedia university converged to compete in the electrifying arenas of EA FC 24, PUBG Mobile, Tekken 7, NBA2K, and COD Mobile. The stakes were high, with a staggering 100K prize dangling like a digital crown awaiting its champion.
NBA enthusiasts witnessed the skilled dribbles and slam dunks of players like Kevin Nokambi from MKU, adding a dynamic layer to the competition. In the virtual realm of PUBG, the likes of Mohamed Aden and Fardowsa Keynan battled for supremacy. CODM’s winners, Roy Derell, Ian Maigwa, Kings Nathaniel, and Bradley Mutabari, etched their names in esports history.
As the cheers echoed through the ultra-modern Mwai Kibaki Convention Center, Tekken 7 enthusiasts marveled at the skills of Michael Muhoro from USIU and others. The air was thick with anticipation and camaraderie, setting the stage for future showdowns. This groundbreaking event laid the foundation for a series of tournaments to come, promising an exhilarating journey into the evolving world of inter-university esports. The stage is set for a new era in inter-university esports, where each clash becomes a chapter in an unfolding saga of virtual triumphs.
This KUEL tournament (1st edition) is proof of the growing talent and pool of Esports in Kenya and in Kenyan Universities. As thus more funding from all stakeholders and tournaments is much needed to unlock the infinite possibilities in E-sport and young budding talent in both male and female players.
