A Beacon of Hope for The Environment

The Public Relations club of Mount Kenya University, on the 24th of January 2024, took it upon themselves to plant a tree right behind the alumni plaza at Mount Kenya University, main campus, Thika.

The tree will hopefully thrive in its environment symbolizing the same way the club under the able leadership of our Patron Dr. Oloo Ong’ong’a and president Mueni Mwema will. The tree also signifies that the PR Club of MKU is working towards Sustainable development goals(SDG’s), in particularly goal number 13 which is climate action, in the country’s green economy strategy and implementation plan.

The tree a “Morgan Oriental arborvitae” is a lime green tree that grows with flat fan like-leaves, it grows in a circular shape, expanding it’s territories. The reason why the Morgan tree was the best fit is because of it’s nature of erosion prevention, water conservation and habitat improvement. During the event Mr. Amos Koros, who is also a treasurer of the people abled differently movement was the special guest who joined club members in planting the tree.

The PR CLUB OF MKU is working towards the ambitious target, in the country of planting 15 Billion trees by the year 2030, which in turn will address climate change. The club echoes the words by one environmentalist James Watt who said: ” A society grows, when old men plant trees, whose shade they know they shall never sit in”
