MKU PR Club visits Moyo Children Center as part of community outreach

“Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm, it’s about doing more good.” These are the words of former Puma C.E.O Jochen Zeitz. The Public Relations Club of Mount Kenya University decided to do more good to the society by planning and executing a corporate social responsibility(CSR) activity at Moyo Childrens Center, Thika on 18/11/2023. This activity was in honour of the International kindness week.

Moyo Childrens Center is located in Runda West in Thika Municipality. It is approximately 700 metres from Mount Kenya University main campus. It has a population of seventeen children who are boys only aged between 6 – 18 years. The nearness of the Childrens home to the members of the PR Club of MKU made it the best choice to hold a C.S.R event. The purpose of C.S.R was to give back to the surrounding community. The PR Club under the leadership of its Patron Dr. Daniel Oloo Ong’ong’a and the President Mueni Mwema organized and planned for this activity and through appropriate coordination the members raised a total of Ksh 2,200. The theme for this drive was #feed20orphans

From the contributions, the club was able to buy Half a bale of wheat flour, a box of milk, 1kg salt, 500g Solid cooking oil, 3lr juice and 3 boxes of biscuits. This items would sustain Moyo Children’s Center for one week. The items were received by Brian Ochieng, the center manager. Through this event, the PR CLUB of MKU was able to work towards sustainable development goal number 2 which is Zero hunger. However the event was not only for official purposes but also the members were emotionally connected to the event .
” I am happy today I was able to spend time with someone and make a positive difference .” Kelvin Kimondo the Club’s recruitment officer said .

The club members were also able to take home some few lessons, they were able to understand that Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) is not only a PR tool but also an act of humanity because the actions bring positive impact on the society. Through the activity the seventeen kids at Moyo Childrens Center were able to get a food stock that would sustain them for a week. Secondly the club members also gained event planning skills by coming up with ideas of how to execute the C.S.R event. Lastly from the successful event the club was able to attract and get new members who were interested in the activities.
We look forward to more events like this to make the society a better place to live. Remember, the words of Sam Levenson; you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other one for helping others.
