Mount Kenya University emerged overall winners in the university category during the 62 edition of Kenya Schools and Colleges National Drama and Film Festivals held at University of Embu on 14th April, 2024.
Education Cabinet Secretary Hon. Ezekiel Machogu, EGH was the chief guest and declared performing arts as compulsory in the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Among the winning genres, the University play titled the PARASITE, The Parasite was a stinging commentary on independent Africa nations turning themselves into beggars, going around with begging bowls. The leaders then loot resources and plunder minerals.
Written and directed by Mr. Oliver Minishi, the play shows that it is the same parasitic mindset in the west with some countries sponsoring civil strife in Africa countries, as they scheme to siphon minerals.
The play also accused western powers of sponsoring brain drain in Africa.
MKU also won spoken word titled ABANDONED and the screen documentary titled PEER PRESSURE.
The University narrative came second while the choral verse, cultural creative dance and screen future film finished 3rd in the genre categories.
This year’s performance has been top notch, it has surpassed all the previous good performances, winning the best University overall trophy has been a chase, and this was possible by the shire hard work and sacrifice by the drama groups. University senior technician in charge of drama stated
